about

Following are annotated lyrics to this song, in parentheses.

Passing over chapters in your life's own book
Make the pages stick and you're off the hook (We have all suffered hurts and heartbreaks, and some of us abuse. The human mind has been known to compartmentalize those episodes, and lock them away while closing off feelings, and trust with the intention of preventing similar pain and damage from occurring again. However, it's been discovered that when we block emotions, and wall people out to prevent hurt, we also shut out more than was intended. When we put up defenses to prevent being hurt, that wall also keeps not only people out, but the builder of the wall in, in an unhealthy isolation.)
Cut another picture from the you and I
You don't want to feel what you'd rather hide (We often hide pains away. For those who have been hurt badly enough, it can be as if they flip a switch and they are quickly detached from not only the intended pain to be blocked, but also the good feelings too, leaving them numb.)
Counting every rose, hiding on the vine
And find my way through the thorns around your heart (Loving someone who has been abused, or hurt takes patience, and strength, and to know when to back off, and when to be there.)

Charting all your hopes and dreams upon the map
Sent out scouts to find, never did come back (Learning to trust again can be very difficult. The "scouts" are the symbol of tests of trust we may set up for someone. These tests are often unreasonable, with the person who creates them in his/her mind looking for instant answers on if they can trust someone else. Typically, it takes us all time to learn who we can trust, and who we'd be better off avoiding. However, even a person being tested who has the best intentions will probably not pass this kind of test).
Tangled in the fences you can't see the truth
That you've built this cage and these walls are you
Counting every rose hiding on the vine (Roses on the thorny vine could represent the true soul of the person versus their outward defensive or detached facade.)
And find my way through the thorns around your heart

Counting every wave breaking on the bow
And navigate my way
And reach your heart somehow

Hope is never the hunting
A fox with hounds in chase (Hope can't be forced.)
Love is when the fox gets lucky and escapes ("Lucky" represents serendipity. Love has a tendency to work out when it's supposed to, just like the fox escaping the pressure and/or danger of the hounds).
And when you've read those chapters
When you meet the pain you need to face
All these thorns will finally burn away (When we take the time to face and work through what has hurt us - even though it may feel like hell to face and sit with - is when we begin to heal, and we can then begin to learn to trust other people and have healthy, strong, loving relationships.)

Counting every rose hiding on the vine
And find my way through the thorns
Around your heart
